In Cliffhanger the site is raw and dramatic since it is on a steep slope which has both a stunning view to the sea and a frontal exposure to the strong northern winds. A simultaneous need to protect from the elements yet reveal the sensation of topography and view naturally emerged. To do this, an irregular shelf of earth was cut, at the back edge of it a twisting stone wall retains the slope while at the front a pool and two simple volumes perch. The stone wall creates a dual sensation of protection and openness since it responds to the slope by matching it with a constant variation in height and inclination. On the front edge, a white and a stone volume as well as the swimming pool, hang on the edge to draw the strong visual sensation of the sea towards the inside. These two edges defi ne between them a sequence of exterior spaces which emerge from or hide into the landscape to allow exterior inhabitation to adjust to the changing natural conditions. These layers of interaction between built and natural elements endow the domestic environment with the intrinsic qualities of the place.
